Our Angel is Off to College!

Some day, when I'm nearing "retirement age" and realize I can't because I'll have college bills to pay, I'll look back at this post and remember my little girl's real first day at "college".

Yep -- yesterday, Kristina started a class at Pierce College.  She's definitely not a "Doogie Howser" ~ instead, we figured it would be helpful to enroll her in a Reading Class in prep for 2nd Grade.

We hear of other children her age who are reading Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter and realize, well, we're not there yet. And we're not striving for that level of reading.  We simply want to give her some additional help with this "leisure activity" that Kristina finds difficult and, therefore, "boring"...

It's not an intensive course but it will be for several hours a day for 5 Saturdays until the end of August.  And I intend on making it fun planning a picnic at the college and showing her that I like to read books, too (even though, sadly, that is not the truth....I fall asleep by the 3rd page....)!!

And here she is!

Pointing to the classroom after finding it on the college map.  And yes, that is her very own homemade (by her) duct tape messenger bag!!

Standing in from of the Business Administration building where the class is...a girl after her mama's heart!

Kristina LOVES to run up and down stairs...

...and she ran up these stairs 4 times without tiring!  Will be signing her up for Track & Field.

Ready to start!

And doesn't every College student finish the day with a snack of fries and a McFlurry??

Star Light, Star Bright....

Just like this blog, our life is all about Kristina.  I marvel daily at the things she says and does and continue to write daily blog posts in my head that never seem to make it to this site.  This crushes me.  I love to write.  I need to write.  I lack the time and energy.

Tonight, at 9pm, Kristina happily accompanied me to Target to go shopping for a birthday gift -- another weekend busy with parties.  When we came home, I unbuckled my sleeping beauty from her booster seat and lifted her from the car.  Ugh -- I can't do this much longer as she is getting to be a big girl.  The stars were out tonight along with a full moon.  Immediately, Kristina remembered a line from the Barbie movie she was watching earlier today.

"Star light, Star bright, first star I see tonight.  I wish I may, I wish I might, have the wish I wish tonight."

I knelt down and she sat on my knee as we recited this line together.  Then she closed her eyes to make a wish....and my eyes welled up with tears.  For years - years - I would walk at night and look up to the sky, find a star and recite this line.  My wish was always for the child that would make us a family.  And for the first time tonight, my wish that was granted was sitting on my knee with an arm around me -- making her own wish.

In May, Kristina was home with us 5 years.  Five awesome, exhausting, life-changing, incredible years.  Here is the "photo shoot" from that day....our shining star herself, our wish come true!

Oh, my...

Kristina is ready for the catwalk...not sure it's ready for her!

And one of the balloons was released towards the heavens...

...with a prayer that all the children left behind find a family.
We will never forget them.
