I wish I was writing to say we were hooked up with a Court Date but instead -- we're trudging along and trying to get hooked up in preparation for our 3+ week stay in Russia.
Today I signed up for Skype, an online communication tool in which we can use the internet to make FREE calls and video to other Skype members. We can call anywhere in the world for free -- and we like free. Tonight we bought a webcam (not free!) to attach to our notebook so if our intended party has a webcam, we'll be able to talk and see each other. If our intended party doesn't have a webcam, then we can talk or text -- still free. The crux of the whole thing is that our intended party has to be online at the same time as us. Hmmmm, but what happens if the Grandparents, for example, aren't on-line when we get K and we want to talk to them?
We're also armed with magicJack, a little USB device, which you can hook up to your computer’s USB port to make calls to any telephone worldwide. In this case, we'll have magicJack hooked up to our computer in Russia, plug the hotel phone into magicJack, and wha-la, we can call the Grandparents or other family and friends (lan lines or cell phones) for no cost! (That's when we tell them "hey, get online, we want to show you K!".)
I'm not a walking commercial for Skype nor magicJack -- especially since we haven't officially used either. But I've contacted so many other adoptive parents who have used both and they all rave about both. So we'll see.
I just feel like I was able to check-off two things on the To-Do list today. If anyone has any comments, please don't hesitate to let us know. The good, the bad, the whatever. ;)
Hope to be in touch soon....with GREAT news!

How cool! I will have to look into that! But, the grandparents have plans to take the boys to the beach house while we travel, and no Internet there, so I don't know who we would Skype???
Fingers crossed for your court date to come soon!!!!!!

Wow - my heart raced when I logged on and saw a new post saying, "We're Hooked Up". Can't wait to read you are on your way!!
Skype is the greatest!
Hope to hear your good news soon!!!!
This really is the only way to maintain sanity right now, isn't it? Planning, planning, planning... I feel ya...
This is so exciting, though! You know the date is coming, you know it's getting soooooo near, now! Girly K is just around the corner, Laura... You're almost there! :D :D :D :D
I wish I had listened to everyone and gotten skype. Next time I will not be caught without it.

Laura, all that technology is awesome. I would feel like Go Go Gadget or more like Penny ;). Can you imagine traveling to Russia years ago when there was no such thing.
Your time is coming. I'm sitting here waiting for the day as well!
Any day now! I can't wait to log in and see the good news. I'm sitting here biting my nails with you but can't imagine how hard the wait must be for you and Jon! Maybe today! Skype me sometime! Do you have your little camera set up already? You'll have to call me from Russia so I can see K :-).
Just came across your blog. ;) We brought our daughter home from Russia in Nov 08.
We used skype while we were there and it was great. Did you know that you can also make phone calls directly from skype? Not sure of the price difference, but you might be able to save yourself the other device. ;)
Those sound like great communication tools. We didn't have any of that, just relied on the internet during our last visit.
I was so hoping to see you have a court date. I just know it is coming soon. Maybe for Easter?

Thinking of you guys! We hope you get your court date very soon. We'll definitely have to have the two little monsters reunite one of these days.

hey guys! definitely the way to go with SKYPE.. it was our lifeline last week when we where there -- we left it on in our hotel room the entire night of "the" night so that our IA doctors and parents could call us at any time and we'd hear it.. a hint - all the hotels we stayed in only had wi-fi in rooms for a fee (a card) -- the card says good for 24 hours, but in small writing it's only good for 500MB --- watch your email/uploading of photos and videos -- do it from the business center for free or in the lobby free wi-fi if you can, to save your "free" time your room.. or buy an extra card before the business center closes so you don't find yourself middle of the night without any MB left.... email or call me for more info :) Amy (OT from the east!)
